Parenting isn’t for the weak of heart, especially if you have an angry or violent teen on your hands. If you don’t want your kid to be one of the million American teens that end up in the juvenile justice system every year, though, here are a few steps on how to deal with the situation.

Accept it

You can’t start unless you accept the fact that there’s a problem. Yes, teens are bound to be dramatic and angsty. But there’s a major difference between having a mood and being at the mercy of erratic mood swings caused by drug abuse. If your teen’s behavior isn’t normal, it may be time to start looking for a Denver boot camp for troubled teens.

Know the signs

Don’t be oblivious to the signs. Take the time to understand your child’s behavior. Is she displaying at-risk behavior? Stealing, experimenting with drugs or alcohol and truancy are just some of the signs of a troubled teen, the HelpGuide says. Other signs also include shop lifting, self-harming, having promiscuous sex and more.

Educate yourself

Getting your troubled teen help will require a better understanding of the situation. Read up on how to get help, how to talk to your teen about it and how you can get help. If you lead with anger, blame and disappointment, that’s only going to drive your child away. Don’t do that. Find out what the right approach is.

Look for a treatment center

This is a good time to look for a reputableDenver boot camp for troubled teens. Find out what services they offer and how they can help your child. Ask about the basics as well: how long will it take? Will you have regular contact with your child? Take the time to check on these things before you pick a treatment center for your troubled teen.
