Reducing Pain and Stress with Shiatsu

The word Shiatsu means ‘finger pressure,’ and is indicative of how this therapy is performed. Shiatsu is an ancient form of bodywork which originated in Japan. It incorporates pressure which is exerted with fingers, thumbs and palms along specific areas of the body to free the flow of energy, reduce pain, induce relaxation and enhance natural healing ability. Shiatsu can be practiced as a stand alone set of techniques or combined with therapeutic massage. No matter how it is offered, the receiver can count on gentle symptom relief.

Shiatsu Theory

In Shiatsu theory, all dis-ease is thought to result from imbalances in the natural flow of vital energy through the body. Energy can become imbalanced through injury, illness, trauma, surgery, and prolonged over or under use. If the free flow of energy is out of balance, areas of energy excess or depletion can occur and compound the problem, creating physical symptoms like pain, inflammation and inflexibility.

How Does Shiatsu Work?

The shiatsu therapist applies gentle pressure in a continuous rhythmic sequence along energy pathways, called meridians. The goal is to improve the flow of energy through these channels. When the flow of energy is balanced, the unease in that area of the body is relieved. The result is often increased local circulation and flexibility, pain reduction, and improved muscle and organ function.

What to Expect From Shiatsu

Shiatsu sessions last anywhere from forty minutes to one hour and are offered fully clothed. The work traditionally takes place on a padded mat on the floor. The session can begin with gentle stretching of the limbs to stimulate energy movement and relax the muscles. Depending on the need of the receiver, shiatsu can be gentle and calming or offered at a more rapid pace with deeper pressure designed to release areas of resistant tension. No matter the approach, the session should never hurt or feel painful.

How Can Shiatsu Help?

Some of the benefits of shiatsu include restoring and maintaining the body’s energy, improving circulation, increasing flexibility, and reducing pain, stress, tension, anxiety, depression and insomnia. Shiatsu is also effective in treating headaches, musculo-skeletal pain, digestive disorders, respiratory issues, morning sickness and menstrual problems.
