Whether you’re trying to find some items for a cosplay or you’re just a fan of vintage style, retro shoes are always a welcome addition to the closet. There are many items throughout the years that have remained relatively similar or could be exchanged in a costume—shoes are not one those things. You can identify just about any decade by its shoes alone; that’s especially true for women’s shoes. Pin up shoes are distinct from just about any other era. They epitomize a kind of femininity that was celebrated in the 1950s and 1960s, which makes them popular to this day. They’re also super attractive.
Design of the Shoes
Pin up shoes tend to have lower heels than comparable twenty-first century shoes and the heels are also a bit chunkier. When they were more common, women were often expected to do a lot of different work in their shoes, so they had to be lower and more stable. There are many modern additions that have managed to make their way into the modern idea of pin up shoes. For example, these shoes are often peep toe pumps that were not nearly as common in the 1950s. They are also often platform, which was not common at all. Platforms have become popular for shoes in the twenty-first century, so it’s understandable that they are entering sexy shoes no matter the era that inspired them.
Materials
The shoes can be made of just about any material, but typically they are leather. If they’re not leather, they’re coated in fabric, which is typically polka dot. Polka dots were incredibly popular in the 1950s and 1960s and live on in retro shoes. Red and white polka dot is obviously the most common, but just about anything can be found.
These are the elements that make a pair of great retro shoes.
