What Are Wrinkle Fillers?

by | Jan 18, 2017 | Physicians

Cosmetic surgeons claim that wrinkle fillers are an alternative to plastic surgery, but what exactly are wrinkle fillers? How do they work to fill wrinkles? Most importantly, are they safe? Here is a brief introduction to wrinkle fillers and how they work. This is not a definitive guide, just a brief overview.

What it Does

Wrinkle fillers have a pretty self-explanatory name. They are compounds that are injected into the skin to fill it up. By adding the filler, you re-inflate the skin so to speak. Essentially the filler is replacing lost volume within the skin. This eliminates wrinkles for several months to a couple of years.

How is This Different Than Botox?

Botox is not really a filler. Instead, it works by blocking muscle contractions in deeper lines like in the forehead. Botox and wrinkle fillers work in different areas as well. In general, Botox is used from under the eyes and up. Fillers, however, are for the cheekbones and down. This is not definitive but is a good rule of thumb to remember.

Is it Safe?

Wrinkle fillers such as Juvederm are made with proteins that are already in your body. In this case, Juvederm is made of hyaluronic acids. These are found in the cell membrane and should not cause a negative reaction. While the composition is different between fillers, you can generally expect the same or similar ingredients.

How Long Does It Last?

This is going to vary from brand to brand, but for most expect between six and nine months between treatments. The area you choose to have treated will play a part as well as high motion areas like around the mouth will not last as long.

This is a very broad overview of wrinkle fillers but should give you an idea of what to expect if you decide to ask your doctor about getting Juvederm in Chicago or your local area.
