If you’re thinking of applying to MBBS courses in the USA, you’re probably looking forward to the great job prospects, mind-expanding cultural experiences, and fantastic student life that you’ll get from it. But what about the course itself? Do you know what to expect from your MBBS courses? Here’s a look at what is in store for you.

Time

Course lengths vary slightly from institution to institution, but in the US it typically takes around four years to complete medical school. International students, or students who want to develop a specialism in a certain area, are sometimes allowed to take an extra 1-4 years to complete this extra training.

Intensity

The course will be difficult and intense. It will be more than a full-time job — many people taking MBBS courses in the USA spend 50 or more hours each week on their studies. However, rest is important to avoid burnout, so schedule some relaxation time too!

Content

A lot of information will be thrown at you, especially in the first year. You will spend a lot of time memorizing information because there’s so much to learn. However, there’s also a practical element, and you’ll do lab classes such as dissecting cadavers.

Clinical Rotations

Students of MBBS courses in the USA will also spend some time in actual clinics as part of their training. You’ll spend time shadowing doctors, doing basic work, and dealing with patients. This experience is crucial to your future career and helps you see what life as a doctor is really like.

Exams

You will take three key exams as part of the Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), which is known colloquially as the Board exam. These are spread throughout the course and are requirements for passing.
