It does this with a series of pipes that can contain water or a refrigerant. These pipe systems may be open or closed depending on the type of unit in use. Absorption-source heat pumps are typically used in large-scale systems. They use an energy source other than electricity such as natural gas, propane, solar energy or geothermal-heated water.
