There are many health concerns that may cause a person to experience Neck Swelling. When swelling in the neck is present, it can be accompanied by other symptoms, such as sore throat, pain, cough, congestion and trouble speaking. To ensure the cause of the swelling is found and properly treated, an ENT will need to examine a patient and perform some tests. This can help to rule out any serious health conditions, so a patient’s health is protected.

Common causes of swelling in the neck include:

     *      Swollen lymph nodes are one of the most common causes of Neck Swelling. When a person’s body is fighting against bacteria, the lymph nodes in the body will begin to work harder towards destroying it. This means more lymph fluid being produced, which causes swelling. When lymph nodes become overly swollen, they can cause pain.

     *      A person’s neck may also become swollen when they have a sore throat. Sore throats may be caused by strep throat, which is highly contagious. An ENT can examine a patient’s throat and then perform a throat swab. This tests for strep and can normally give a result in about ten minutes. Doctors often grow a throat culture to ensure a false negative is not experienced. Since strep requires antibiotics, it is imperative people see their doctor when they are experiencing a sore throat.

     *      When the thyroid gland is not working properly, people can experience a goitre. This means the thyroid gland has become enlarged and is causing swelling in the neck. The doctor can determine if a patient has a goitre through examination. If one is found, blood testing will need to be carried out to check thyroid levels. Medications can be used to bring a goitre down and stabilize thyroid hormone levels in the body.

No matter the cause of swelling in the neck, it is important to consult with a doctor so the cause can be found. Through examination, symptoms checks, medical history and testing, the doctor can find the cause and properly treat the patient, so the swelling is relieved.
