A Brief Overview of Masonry Construction for Residential Pavement, Fences and Other Features

by | May 4, 2019 | Fence Contractor

Masonry Construction is the building of structures using units of hard materials held together with mortar. Common examples of those materials include brick, stone, concrete blocks and clay tile. Residential property owners may want a variety of masonry features built, such as a driveway, patio, fence and retaining wall. Using tools like trowels, chisels and jointers, the masons build all those features for functional and aesthetic purposes.

A Range of Designs

There are virtually no limits to the designs that can be created through Masonry Construction. Property owners can choose the materials, colors, textures, shapes and sizes for the units. Bricks and brick pavers are available in numerous hues, for example. Even concrete can be colored with stain during cement mixing for dramatic effects. Clay and concrete can have a variety of finishes added during the manufacturing process.

The customer can ask for a sample panel after a decision has been made about the design. This helps make clear how the entire structure will look, including the mortar.

Consistency or Randomness

Many customers of an organization such as Mission Fence & Patio Builders want all the units to be a uniform size, preferring consistency in the design. Others like a more old-fashioned look reminiscent of stone walls, fences and foundations. Historically, masons needed to use the stones they could find and didn’t have the advantage of including only those of a very similar size and shape. Consider that this method of building has been ongoing for thousands of years.

Labor-Intensive Work

The work is labor intensive since it is usually completed entirely on the site. Masons typically do not bring pre-fabricated panels to install. Instead, each unit is placed together piece by piece and mortar added to essentially glue the pieces together.

Repair Projects

These contractors also can do repair work, and fix or replace old deteriorating masonry structures. Mortar tends to loosen and crumble after decades pass, and masons often only need to replace that material while leaving the bricks or stones in place. They blend the new mortar so it matches the color of the older material that is still in good shape. Information on one particular contractor can be seen at Missionfence.com.
