Caring For Copper Roofing

by | Aug 12, 2016 | Roofing

If someone has Copper roofing on top of their home or business, they will want to take the needed steps in caring for it appropriately. Copper roofing will give a structure a great appearance while protecting the building from unnecessary damage from leaking. Here are some tips one can use to protect their copper roofing, so it lasts for years to come.

It is important to remove debris from a copper rooftop regularly, so moisture does not settle on top of the metal surface. Rinse the rooftop with a garden hose to remove debris. If large branches or clumps of leaves are to be removed by hand, it is important the person cleaning the roof wears gloves, so their fingertips do not touch the copper. Oils from the hands can leave behind dark fingerprints if protective coverings are not worn.

Copper will tarnish with age. To help keep the roof from becoming discolored, a solution of bleach and water can be used to brighten it easily. Use a soft-bristled brush to scrub the copper to remove staining. The bleach solution can then be rinsed with plain water.

If areas of tarnish are noticed, they can be removed with sandpaper. Simply rub the tarnished area with a piece of fine-grit sandpaper in one direction. Rinse the area well afterward. It is a good idea to add a solvent made especially for copper protection afterward. This can be rubbed over the copper rooftop by hand with a piece of microfiber cloth. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to determine how long to keep the solvent on the copper before rinsing it away. This will renew discolored copper as well as give it a layer of protection against future wear.
