Do You Need Low VOC Paints?

What are VOCs?

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are gases emitted from certain types of solids or liquids and often include a slew of chemicals that have negative effects on human health. Short term effects are a concern but in extreme cases, long-term effects might be detected as well, says the EPA.

Where do you get VOCs?

Paint is one of the many sources of VOCs. That doesn’t mean completely abandoning paint. With low VOC paint, you can still use paint on your walls without fearing the worst.

What are the benefits?

The reduced toxins in the paint mean less allergies and chemical sensitivities for you and your family. And because there aren’t any hazardous waste or chemicals in the paint, cleanup and disposal of the paints you used are much, much simpler and less of a hassle. Coverage is also good with low VOC paint. It can effectively cover up flaws in your walls.

Where to buy?

Make sure you shop for your paints from reputable online sources. After you check out the basics—how long has the company been in business, do they seem reliable, are they trustworthy?—then browse through their inventory. Consider other products they have on offer? Do you want to try using wallpaper with some of your walls to mix it up? If they also carry the brands or styles and designs you want, you could order your paints and wallcoverings at the same time. It’s easy and convenient, hitting two birds with one stone.

Tips I should know?

Always read the label and product literature. And make sure you order enough so you won’t run out in the middle of fixing your walls and find yourself needing to wait for the next order to finish things out. Be sure to circulate the air inside your home to reduce the impact of the paints as they dry.
