Exploring the World of Fiber Arts for the Purpose of a Higher Ed Degree

by | Apr 13, 2020 | Education

As an artist, you can pursue any number of advanced degrees in the arts. When you are trying to decide how best to meet your unique creative and artistic interests and skills, you might explore several colleges and art degrees. When your interests overlap fibers and textiles with art, you could pursue a fiber arts degree. Here is what you can use a fiber arts degree for.

Creating Clothing

Fashion design may be another branch of fiber art, but your fiber arts degree allows you to make clothes. By examining multiple fibers, fabrics, patterns, and fabric designs, you can create various clothing items that could become items for sale with fashion buyers. Your clothing pieces could be on store racks or shelves, and you would garner a profit from every garment sold.

Upholstery and Window Coverings

Every piece of furniture on which you sit and every curtain or drape you use on a window is tied to fiber arts. Someone with this type of degree handles creating the fabric and the designs for these household décor items. You design these items to be durable and have specific features that make them desirable to consumers.

Rugs and Other Textiles

Woven rugs, Persian rugs, Oriental rugs, high-end floor rugs, and cheap floor rugs are all related to this degree. You may either be responsible for their production, or you may be responsible for finding the rug’s value when asked for your expertise. If any of the above options sound like something you want to pursue, contact School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
