Healthy Teeth for Life: Tips for You and Your Family

There are so many great reasons to keep your family’s teeth and gums in tip-top shape. For starters, their beautiful smiles and avoiding discomfort caused by toothaches. Periodontal disease leads to other diseases in the body so that is another reason you should make sure they take good care of their teeth and gums. The good news is there are a variety of different ways in which you can help keep your family’s teeth and gums healthy for years to come.

Start Them Early

Even though there are a lot of ways to prevent tooth decay, studies have shown that one in four children develop some form of decay before they ever step food in the classroom. That is why it is crucial that you teach your children proper oral care habits as soon as they get their first tooth. Of course, when they are this small they are unable to do this themselves, but you can wipe their teeth off of with a soft brush or damp cloth after meals.

Use Fluoride – but not too much!

Fluoride has the ability to strengthen your teeth’s enamel which decreases the chances of decay. Studies have shown that three out of four Americans drink water that contains a small amount of fluoride. You can also purchase toothpastes and mouth washes that contain fluoride. Make sure that when your children use fluoride that they use it sparingly as it could cause white spots to form on the teeth.

Brush and Floss

Tooth decay and gum disease still remain a big problem for Americans, even in teenagers. It is important that you encourage everyone in your family to brush twice a day and floss once a day. Make sure that toothbrushes are changed 3-4 times every year. A big percentage of Americans do not floss regularly. Flossing is the key to keeping your gums healthy which is the key to keeping your teeth and your body healthy.

Chew Gum or Rinse after Meals

On top of brushing and flossing you should also rinse your mouth with mouthwash or chew gum after you have a meal. This will help to prevent decay as well as problems with the gums. Make sure that you are chewing sugar-free gum as sugar can be bad for the teeth.
