The Advantages Of A Self-Retracting Lifeline

Any quality fall arrest system has three important sections. These include the anchor, the connecting device, and the fall protection harness. Each component is equally important in providing safety in the event of a fall. The connecting device, which is typically a self-retracting lifeline (SRL) or sometimes a lanyard designed to absorb the shock of the fall, has to be durable, strong and reliable and work with the harness and the anchor.

The Basics

It is possible to hear several different terms used to describe a self-retracting lifeline. They can be called yo-yos or personal fall limiters, and they are designed to actually stop a fall in about two feet rather than the standard six feet of free fall distance found with lanyards.

As they do engage faster, they make rescue easier. They are also the preferred option when working closer to the ground as compared to the standard lanyard system. The length of these lines can be up to 175 feet or more to allow for maximum movement on any job.

As the worker moves away from the anchor, the SRL plays out, providing a consistent amount of light tension to keep the line up and out of the way. This tension also allows the line to retract into the unit as the worker returns closer to the anchor location.

Maintenance

The maintenance for any self-retracting lifeline is minimal and very easy to complete. It is important to visually inspect the SRL before each use to determine any areas of cracks or damage that can occur when in use or if dropped.

It is also important to pull out the lifeline all the way and ensure it fully retracts without any irregularities. It should offer a full, continuous motion that is free from any hesitation.

Depending on the work conditions, the SRL line will need to be cleaned if it makes contact with any grease, dirt or other types of potential contaminants. Pull the line all the way out and use a lint-free cloth and warm, soapy water to wash the line. Rinse with clean, warm water and allow to air dry or use a towel to dry the line before retracting.

It is important only to use the SRL as directed. Do not combine it with other types of fall arrest systems and only use it with approved harnesses and connectors for the highest level of safety and protection.
