Three Dental Care Tips to Follow After You Get Invisalign Orthodontics

by | Jul 23, 2019 | Dentistry

Invisalign is an ideal solution for a person with slightly misaligned teeth. Perhaps you had braces as a teenager, and now your teeth have shifted slightly out of their ideal places in your mouth. After you receive your first aligner for Invisalign in Plano, TX, use these three tips in order to care for your teeth and smile.

Remove the Aligner While Eating

With Invisalign, the aligner needs to be removed while you eat. This reduces the amount of debris and wear and tear of the aligner. As with other types of orthodontic devices, it is important to avoid certain types of foods. Do not bite into ice or hard foods when using the aligners. Avoid chewing nonfood items, including pencils and fingernails.

Brush Your Teeth Before Replacing Your Invisalign

After a meal, brush your teeth before replacing the aligner. You should brush your teeth three times every day during your period of orthodontic care. If you have a sugary snack such as ice cream, brush your teeth again. Brushing before replacing the aligner reduces the amount of sugar that is able to remain on your teeth. It also lessens your risk of dental cavities.

Floss and Use a Mouth Rinse Daily

Use a waxed dental floss or a floss pick once per day. This removes debris that your toothbrush could not get out. Make a “C” shape around the base of each tooth, going slightly under the gums. This prevents the formation of tartar, the hardened plaque deposits that are a leading cause of gum disease. Invisalign may cause your teeth to dry out and your mouth to feel too dry. Consider using a mouth rinse formulated for people with dry mouth.
