Standard or EI transformers are commonplace in industrial applications today. However, donut-shaped toroidal transformers are very popular also, as business owners discover the many benefits they have to offer. Here are some of the good things you can expect from these funny looking power sources.
Why Do They Look Like Bagels?
The unique shape allows windings to go through the center of the core. This offers even distribution. Most cores are silicon, iron, or nickel alloy construction. However, iron powder cores are an important part of high-frequency operations. The round shape makes power transmission more efficient than standard transformers. Also, this method limits electrical interference.
Efficiency
Most people turn to toroidal transformers for efficiency. They produce a lot of power for their size and weight. In fact, if space and weight is an issue, choose a bagel shaped transformer.
Round transformers are more efficient because all grains run in the right direction. With a standard transformer, nearly half of the windings move in the wrong direction. Also, EI transformers create an air gap and round ones do not.
Bagel shaped transformers have evenly spaced windings. This creates more flux density than standard transformers. Because all windings run the same direction, it creates more magnetic flux.
Humming Noises
Have you ever noticed that some transformers emit a noticeable humming or buzzing noise? Round transformers emit less noise because they have no air gaps. They make as little as 800 percent less humming sounds.
Magnetic noises are very low with donut shaped transformers because they generate lower magnetic fields than EI units. In some cases, you don’t have to install EMI shielding equipment.
Size
You can place toroidal transformers in single rack equipment, and they are often custom-made for diameter and height. You can’t do this with standard transformers. When you shop for transformers, choose an experienced manufacturer with a trusted reputation, for best results.
