What Is Siding?

by | Mar 23, 2013 | Roofing

Siding is a house’s outer covering that is intended to protect the house from harmful weather and help shed water. The reason it’s so important to make sure that you have good siding in Minneapolis is because moisture can slowly deteriorate vertical boards, horizontal boards, sheet materials and shingles as well. It can be challenging to keep the elements from slipping in through the joints of your house, which can be done by covering or sealing the joints or by overlapping roofing materials.

One thing you might not hear about too often when you do your research on siding is building paper. Building paper is an important part of siding because you’ll always have to buy it once you decide what kind of siding that you’d like, so you should educate yourself on siding as well as building paper in order to adequately protect your home. Some of the material options available to you for siding include plastic, metal, wood or combination materials.

If you want wood siding, it will be placed in horizontal rolls that overlap each other in a pattern known as clapboard. You can also have your wood siding manufactured out of plain weather-resistant woods like redwood. If you like the look of a clapboard painting for your siding but don’t want it made from wood, you can instead get it in a plastic, such as vinyl. Just be aware that plastic siding is made in units that are twice as high as original clapboard. One of the reasons that plastic siding has become so popular recently is that it’s easy to take care of and is inexpensive.

Buildings that are made for more practical purposes often use corrugated galvanized steel sheet siding to protect the building from weather and water. In the past, simulated wood clapboard was constructed from aluminum. Composite materials used for siding include fiber cement, asphalt, asbestos and aluminum, any of which can be shaped into boards or shingles.

Currently, researchers are trying to develop siding that does more than protect a home from excess water and weather. In the future it might be possible for you to have siding in Minneapolis that offers your house a lot more security while still managing to be aesthetically pleasing to your eyes as well as the eyes as of anyone who happens to drive by you home.
