Most dentists believe that it’s always best to save the tooth in whatever way is possible. However, Chicago residents can always choose to have the tooth extracted if they don’t want a lengthy treatment process or want to consider alternatives later, such as partial dentures or implants. Dental extractions may sometimes be necessary, especially if the tooth is decayed too much or an infection has set in.
What is It?
Dental extractions are a removal of a tooth from your mouth. In almost all cases, an extraction is performed when the tooth is damaged. However, wisdom teeth can be removed, even if they aren’t damaged. In most cases, a wisdom tooth becomes impacted, which means it can’t break the surface because of bone or gum in the way. They can also cause severe pain and push the rest of the teeth together.
While most Chicago residents only consider removal of the third molars, any tooth can be removed if it is damaged or decayed enough. Likewise, you may need to have one or more teeth removed if periodontal disease has caused damage to the structure of the tooth or supporting tissue.
Benefits
While almost every dentist prefers to preserve your teeth, a severely damaged tooth is doing you no good. If you aren’t a suitable candidate for a root canal or don’t want to consider that option, the best thing to do is to remove the tooth. Otherwise, you risk causing more decay and inflammation to the surrounding gums and other teeth. If you leave it alone, it can even lead to the development of heart disease and other health conditions.
