The word “graduate” has always had shades of meaning that only become obvious from the context. Like so many other words, it has a Latin root; in this case, the Latin word “gradus” meaning a “step”. Interestingly, adding the Latin prefix “de” to gradus is the root of the English word “degree” in the sense of the rate at which something happens (from one step to the next).
Academic Graduation
As well as things like degrees of temperature, burns, murder, etc; a degree has also come to describe an academic rank conferred by a college or university after examination or after completion of a course, or conferred as an honor. To graduate is the verb describing the achievement of such an academic degree and a graduate is a person who has achieved the degree. Here in the US, we originally used the term for someone successfully completing high school or above. However, its meaning can be allocated to anyone moving from one level of education to another – even if the reason for the move is merely the passing of another school year.
Graduation As A Celebratory Ceremony
While one’s graduation from high school is an important milestone in anyone’s life that is an obvious cause for celebration; can the same be said when a child graduates from grade one up to grade two? All kids enjoy a party but most of them get bored listening to long winded speeches. If these naturally occurring graduations include singling out some kids for special mention; this could cause resentment amongst others. However, to the proud parents; this is another story.
